Dr Karen Fowler-Watt is a former BBC journalist, who has significant experience of reporting conflict and trauma, at home and abroad. Now, as a senior academic at Bournemouth University, she is engaged in reflection on issues associated with journalism, with the aim of seeking best practices. Her research focuses on empathy in reporting conflict, trauma awareness in journalism education and marginalised voices. Karen is currently working on a journalism education project with Global Voices and she is co-investigator for a funded project working with children affected by the civil conflict in Colombia.

Before he embarked on a career in journalism Kurt was a Lecturer in International Relations at the London School of Economics.
Laura Garcia’s work as a multimedia journalist started back in her home town of Mexico as a photographer for a newspaper. She also worked for newspapers and film production companies in the US before coming to the UK in September 2011. Lindsey Hilsum is the International Editor of Channel 4 News, and the author of “In Extremis; the Life of War Correspondent Marie Colvin” which won the 2019 James Tait Black prize for biography. She has covered conflict and international affairs for 30 years, reporting in recent times from Saudi Arabia, the USA, Syria, Ukraine and Libya. She covered the 2003 invasion of Iraq from Baghdad, the 1999 war in Kosovo from Belgrade and was the only English-speaking foreign correspondent in Rwanda when the genocide started in 1994. She has won several awards for her TV reporting and writes regularly for the New York Review of Books, Granta and several British newspapers. Her first book was “Sandstorm; Libya in the Time of Revolution”.

Patricia de Mesquita PhD is a freelance documentary filmmaker whose career has spanned over 20 years of foreign affairs programming. Dr Paul Lashmar is an Associate Professor in Journalism at City, University of London and is a former Head of the Department (2019-2021). He has been an investigative journalist on the staff of The Observer, Granada TV’s World in Action current affairs series and The Independent. Since 2020 he has been writing about slavery and reparations for The Observer and the Conversation. His other specialist areas include the media and journalism, investigative journalism, propaganda, intelligence agencies and historic organised crime. He has been an journalism academic since 2021. Rosie Waterhouse PhD is an experienced investigative journalist having worked for local and regional newspapers, five national newspapers including the Sunday Times Insight Team (twice), the Independent and Independent on Sunday (Investigations Editor), the Mail on Sunday, and the Daily Telegraph and as a reporter for BBC Newsnight. Until September 2016 she was Director of the MA in Investigative Journalism at City University London, a pioneering course she created in 2007. She is now working freelance and most recently wrote a series of articles in Private Eye on the 'Satanic Panic' and other false historical allegations of child sex abuse. She has contributed freelance work to New Scientist, New Statesman, the Sunday Times, the Mail on Sunday, the Daily Mail, the Guardian, and acted as consultant to BBC Newsnight and BBC Real Story. Rosie has been researching false allegations of child sexual abuse – in one form or another – for 31 years and her published work on these issues forms the basis of her PhD by Prior Publication, awarded by City University London in August 2014. Her thesis is entitled “Satanic abuse, false memories, weird beliefs and moral panics: Anatomy of a 24-year investigation”.
Roz McKenzie is a journalist and a trainer of new reporters entering the industry. She has worked in the regional and national press for over 20 years, as well as playing a lead role in delivering apprenticeships in journalism. Roz is the apprenticeship training manager at PA Training (part of PA Media) and sits on the NCTJ's Journalism Qualifications Board.
Sarah Baxter is a columnist and former deputy editor of the Sunday Times. She started her career in publishing, working for Penguin and Virago Press, before joining Time Out as a news reporter. She went on to serve as political editor of the New Statesman and subsequently News Review editor of the Sunday Times. In 2001, she was New York correspondent of the paper, reporting on the 9/11 attacks, and then Washington Bureau Chief, covering the election of Barack Obama. A journalist for well over 30 years, Sheron Boyle has freelanced since 1995, writing news and features for the print media, mainly the tabloids and magazines - and loves it - though she has occasionally dipped her toes into the broadsheets. Yorkshire-based Sheron specialises in crime, health, travel and anything that comes under the human interest umbrella. She has had numerous exclusives published relating to 13-times serial killer Peter Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper, over the years. Her investigation into the care and deaths of numerous babies and youngsters at the Bristol Children's Hospital, as revealed in the Sunday People, lead to a Government inquiry being held. Her work has been featured in documentaries and TV dramas. Sheron has also ghosted and written books. Not afraid to put her head above the parapet, Sheron is a fervent campaigner for freelancers' rights and her campaign to end byline banditry lead to the then Sun newspaper editor ringing her to tell her the shabby practice was being stopped at the newspaper. She has also set up a freelancers group, Can Pay, Won't Pay, to support her colleagues when fighting for fair treatment, to be paid for their work done and to protect their copyright on their stories. It remains an ongoing battle.
Stephen Jukes is Professor of Journalism in the Faculty of Media & Communication at Bournemouth University. He worked in Europe, the Middle East and the Americas as a foreign correspondent, regional editor and Global Head of News for Reuters before moving into the academic world. His research focuses on areas of objectivity and emotion in news with an emphasis on conflict journalism and trauma. His latest book is entitled Journalism and Emotion and explores the impact of today’s emotionally-driven media environment on the practice of journalism and the experience of journalists. He is a trustee of the Dart Centre for Journalism & Trauma in Europe and Vice President of the Kurt Schork Memorial Fund, a charity which supports local journalists, freelancers and fixers worldwide.

Previously she was Deputy Editor and Foreign Editor of ITN’s Channel 4 News. She is a member of Sky News editorial board and a fellow of the Royal Television Society.
